The Student Legal Clinic at Appalachian State University offers students free and confidential legal advice, information and referrals from a licensed attorney. It is a partner program of Off-Campus Student Services.
Mission
The mission of the Student Legal Clinic and Off-Campus Student Services is to provide information and resources to support student success.
Both programs share the following goals:
- To provide information that will help students make appropriate decisions
- To teach students problem-solving tools and strategies
- To develop community relationships that benefit students
- To strengthen the connection between off-campus students and campus and community resources
Our goal is to give students tools to navigate situations they encounter. To this end, the attorney will provide information and advice and will assist students in developing strategies for addressing their issues. In addition, the attorney will provide legal research, review court papers or other documents, help students draft written communications and make referrals. Referrals may be to local attorneys or to other resources (e.g., government agencies or advocacy organizations). The Student Legal Clinic maintains a good working relationship with the Watauga County District Attorney’s office and, in many situations, is able to provide case-specific information about how to approach minor criminal charges.
